Mark G. Shurtleff Jr. (R-Loudoun) answered the door and told me that he was the person who started the business in 2012.
He told me his wife is a licensed medical marijuana caregiver, and he’s been selling the medicine since he was a teenager.
He says he made $100,000 last year selling the stuff for his patients.
“We’ve got patients that can’t afford to buy it, so it’s the only option,” Shurtleffer told me.
Shurtleff is the first lawmaker to be licensed as a licensed medicinal marijuana caregiper.
He said he was also the first to sell cannabis in Pennsylvania in 2014.
He also said he got into the industry because he wanted to help patients.
“I saw the opportunity, and I took it,” he said.
“There’s no one that’s doing it better than I am.”
Shurtleffer is also the only member of the House of Representatives in his state.
That makes him the only person to ever have been licensed as an independent medicinal marijuana physician.
It was a long time coming, he said, but he’s glad to have the opportunity to help other people.
Sharen Miller, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Licensed Medical Cannabis Commission, said it was an exciting time.
“As the state grows in population, more people are moving to the state to access marijuana,” Miller said.
But Miller said more needs to be done.
“In the next five years, the number of licensed medical cannabis physicians is expected to increase by 30 percent, with the majority of these physicians having only one patient,” she said.
Shreeff is one of the people who has a lot of patients.
He’s helped several people who were terminally ill and had to be hospitalized, and has also been a mentor to patients.
Shreeff has been selling marijuana for more than a decade and is also a board member for the National Association of Medical Cannabis Therapists.
“I have been working with patients for 30 years, and it’s never been about money,” Shreeffer said.
He is also proud of the work he has done with his family.
“My wife is one and a half years old, so we are the sole breadwinners,” he added.
“This has been the best job in my life,” he told me with a laugh.
He added that his wife also works as a nurse and that he wants to help others.
Shureff said that the only thing he’s worried about is his own future.
He has two sons and says he has been in the industry for 35 years.
“One of my daughters has leukemia, and we were going to try to get her on that,” Shureff told me, before adding, “My son is going to be 60 next year.
If that happens, I don’t know what I would do.”
